Donkey Language (A humorous story)

This happened a few years ago and it is a true story. A group of friends made a trip from Debre Birhan to Debre Sina. It was a chilly but enjoyable morning. The chills scratched deep into our flesh, but that alone gave us a certain feeling. As we made the hour-long trip crossing valleys and mountains, we were talking about different issues including the historical importance of the place we were heading to. Even geographically it is a place worth noting. The mountain chain we follow is said to march from Shewa to Tigray. To the left of the mountain, the chilly highlands are sleeping, whereas to the right lowlands neighboring the Afar desert get hotter and hotter like furnace as the day progresses. After about 50 minutes-drive we stopped at the Menelik window, a cliff where one can see the lowland areas through. This was near Tarmaber town. We saw what was said part of the Awash valley across the mist and headed to Tarmaber. At Tarmaber, we saw the small shops, restaurants and houses, and bought food items form the people who came inside the bus. Then, off to Debre Sina. Past Tarmaber, we entered the eerie tunnel. How this tunnel fills you with awe and heaviness as you think a big mountain is reining just above it! Just past the last of the three tunnels made by the Italians during the five year war, we got out of the car and started taking in the brisk air. Everyone was talking about the serenity and beauty of that place which was sometimes cloudy and other times sunny. We took group photos and tasted every moment of our stay. Afterwards, we started our half-an-hour walk down towards the small town. A friend spotted a donkey coming towards us and invited us to bet. The quest was a strange one that everyone kept laughing. The guy was promising to make the donkey’s penis erect only using words. He started saying, “kullll kulll kulll kul kul kul” each time his voice getting louder and saying the sounds longer than before. We saw the donkey act to this immediately. Isn’t it amazing how the young man knew donkey language! The jack started to look for a jennet in every side but there was none. Its penis started to erect. Not only this, it ejaculated. Its semen dropped on the asphalted road. Everyone of us was laughing. Deep inside I felt pity to the donkey.  This is the one thing I remember from that trip. Let me add one more. There was an Indian teacher with us. He was sending voice messages to his wife about our stay at the town, not this donkey one though. Then, the wife was happy for us since she knew us before she went back to India to give birth. Whenever he told her that he saw old people asking for alms, she told him to give them money and he did. They are the most kindly Indians I knew. How kind was our friend! His kindness was unparalleled by anyone I know. The other Indians didn’t befriend or enjoy with locals.

The End.
